BCMA Podcast Episode 9: 2019 BCMA Conference Highlight

December 2019

The BCMA is once again beginning to wrap up for a well-deserved holiday break. In the meantime, we leave you with this podcast episode to accompany our latest issue of Roundup Magazine. This issue focused on our 2019 annual conference. To celebrate the role museums play in connecting people through language and story, this year’s conference theme was Spoken Words, Shared Stories. This theme acknowledges the importance of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, explores how museums can become involved in language revitalization, and allows for discussion on how our organizations use stories to communicate, educate, and encourage social interactions.

Here is a recording of one of our conference presentations; Siwin: Word Power presented by Julie Bevan and Arlene Deptuck of the Nanaimo Art Gallery. The gallery’s action research project, Siwin: Word Power, contributes to revitalizing local Indigenous languages. Julie and Arlene talk about what’s at stake, about collaboration and mentorship, art as a tool for language learning and practice.
