BCMA Gathering 2023

Delegate Registration

 Haida Gwaii  |   September 25 – 28, 2023
It’s our great pleasure to announce that the BCMA’s 2023 gathering will take place in person during the week of September 25 – 28, 2023!

The BCMA community has been invited by our colleagues at Saahlinda Naay Haida Gwaii Museum and the Haida Heritage Centre to join them for three days of learning on the land, connecting with each other, and exploring our collective work, impact, and responsibilities.

To ensure that we offer an event that reflects our host community’s venue capacity and that our delegates are received and remembered as respectful guests, there will be a limited number of available tickets. The BCMA is offering bursaries, discounted tickets, and virtual engagement opportunities to make the gathering as accessible as possible to the widest range of members and delegates.

In-person tickets for the 2023 Gathering are currently sold out. We encourage you to join us virtually with a Digital Registration.

After several years of research, experimentation, and iteration, the BCMA is excited to offer virtual delegate registration for our 2023 gathering. Join the conversations, experience Haida Gwaii, and connect with peers from work, home, or around the world.

In addition to the gathering, delegates may participate in field trips and other adventures in Haida Gwaii this September

Tickets for the 2023 Gathering are currently sold out. We encourage you to join us digitally!

With our valued guests comfort in mind, the BCMA is offering an airport shuttle service to different locations on Haida Gwaii on select dates.

In-Person Attendance Registration

In-person tickets for the 2023 Gathering are currently sold out. We encourage you to join us virtually.

If you would like to join the waitlist, please click on one of the buttons below to add your name and preferred ticket type.

Note: Due to capacity limits for the remote community of Haida Gwaii, we kindly ask you to limit attendance to a maximum of three people from the same organization. The annual BCMA gathering is held in different parts of the province (and sometimes virtually) and we would like to offer as many BCMA members as possible, and especially those from the North Coast and neighbouring regions, an opportunity to attend this event.

We recognize that many of our members pay for conference tickets, travel, and accommodations out of pocket and rely on the annual conference as an essential way of connecting with their colleagues. We also understand that the costs associated with attending this year’s gathering on Haida Gwaii will be higher than in previous years. In an effort to make this event more accessible, we are offering the ticket options below.

Gud ad hlGang.gulXa Working Together: Caring for our treasures

The Saahlinda Naay Haida Gwaii Museum and Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) have teamed up to deliver an introductory workshop on the care of three types of Haida belongings: Naaxiin (Chilkat) robes, rattles, as well as cedar and spruce root woven hats and baskets. The workshop, divided into modules focused on each type of belonging, offers the opportunity to learn directly from Haida participants and museum staff and CCI conservators. Using belongings from the Saahlinda Naay collection and didactic materials, and through group discussion and hands-on activities, attendees will learn:

  • how each type of belonging is made,
  • its significance and use,
  • the vulnerabilities of the materials and structures to agents of change,
  • culturally specific collections care and protocols, and
  • preventive conservation measures.
