Volunteer Spotlight

Helen Cade, Clinton Museum

Lillian Fehr, Clinton Museum, Clinton, B.C.

Senior museum member, volunteer, and long-time resident, Helen Cade, is assembling a record of Clinton’s Citizen of the Year Award for the Clinton Museum. This award started in 1972 and the intervening years have seen a lot of change. Helen wishes to create an accurate record of the award and a true account of people she has known here.

Helen herself moved to Clinton from Ashcroft in 1952. She was a young teacher who married local rancher Charles Dougherty. She later married Bud Cade. Helen has been welcoming visitors and new volunteers to the museum for many years. Her warm and gracious presence is appreciated by all, as are her silver polishing skills, which she puts to use during our annual museum clean-up days.

Among many other details, Helen remembers when Clinton hosted three hotels, including the original Cariboo Lodge, the Frontier Hotel, and the famous Clinton Hotel. Sadly, each of these establishments was destroyed by fire. Want to learn more about the local tourism industry? Museum volunteers are developing a mobile display to accompany a model of the Clinton Hotel. This history project is supported by the Archie and Dorothy McLaughlin Memorial Fund, administered by the BC Interior Community Foundation.

Helen hopes that her Citizen of the Year Award project preserves some of the contributions that individuals have made to our Village over the past 50 years. If you have any pictures or information about previous Clinton Citizen of the Year Award ceremonies, Helen would love to include them.
