BC Museums Week 2020
Join the BCMA to celebrate #MuseumWeek from May 11 – 17, 2020, and International Museum Day on May 18, 2020
This annual event brings together museums, arts and culture professionals from around the world on social media to connect, inspire each other and highlight the amazing work that is done in the sector every day across every continent.
BC Museums Week is our province’s contribution to the international online festival showcasing our own outstanding museums, art galleries, historic sites, cultural centres, and other memory institutions here in British Columbia. We encourage our members to join the digital celebrations in 2020 and engage with us, with each other and with colleagues from around the globe. BC Museums Week is our chance to collaboratively shine a light on our sector and increase awareness about the value and impact of our organizations.
How to join BC Museums Week
Decide on your strategy for #MuseumWeek and plan your content for one or more of your social media channels – such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Social media not only offers instant connections to your immediate audience but is a great way to engage with other cultural organizations that align with your mission. #MuseumWeek is also a unique opportunity to try new formats and functions on social media and to be inspired while being a part of an international initiative in the cultural sector.
Top Tips:
- Include an image or other visual media to make your posts more appealing.
- Schedule your posts throughout the day (and in the lead-up to the week) to ensure they get noticed. If you don’t have a scheduler already, try Hootsuite for free and get up to 30 posts scheduled in advance.
- Use Facebook Events for on-site programs throughout the week
On-site Involvement
On-site programs are a great way to celebrate BC Museums Week and get people through your doors. While on-site and in-person programs are not possible this year due to COVID-19 there are ways you can still celebrate digitally. Some suggestions are:
- Digital special events for kids and families
- Behind the scenes tours of the collections
- Introducing your site or your staff
- Live streams or recorded concerts or other festival-style events
- Online trivia
