Remembering Marl Brown of Fort Nelson Fame
The BCMA wishes to celebrate the memory of an unmatched member of the BC Museum community, Marl Brown, founder of the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum. Those who have had their lives touched by Marl are reflecting on his impact, his passion, and his commitment. Our condolences to the Brown family and friends.
Marl Brown was the recipient of BCMAâs 2018 Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes an individual who has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the arts, culture, and heritage fields over an extended period of time. In his nomination it was said that âIf you ask 100 random people from Fort Nelson, they will all tell you that the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum is here because of him and without him, the Museum wouldnât exist.â For over 30 years, Marl was the first person to arrive at the museum in the morning and the last one to leave at night

In 1992, Marl was awarded the Canada 125 medal, which recognizes Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, to their community, and to Canada. When asked to describe Marl Brown to the Vancouver Sun some years ago, one long-time resident said simply, âMarl Brown is Fort Nelson, and Fort Nelson is Marl Brown.â
Marlâs impact is evident from the numerous articles about him throughout his life. Even in the online reviews for the Fort Nelson Museum, Marl is hailed as a local hero. Here is a small sampling of media coverage if you would like to learn more about his unique contributions to the sector.
We thank Marl Brown for his contribution to the museum community in BC and we thank his family for allowing us to participate in the celebration of his life and memory.
