Museum Manager Mondays

Being a museum manager is a challenging and often isolating role. Museum Manager Mondays is a new program to help professionals in leadership positions connect, network, and provide mutual support.

Looking for more ways to connect?

Join us monthly for Watercooler Wednesday for casual conversation and connection.

Join BCMA Executive Director Ryan Hunt for a monthly one-hour online discussion where museum, gallery, heritage, and cultural managers, EDs, and lead curators can discuss the challenges they face in their roles – from navigating stakeholder relationships, to working with boards, to HR issues, and beyond. All too often cultural managers feel isolated in their roles and with the increased rates of stress and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we feel part of a connected and supportive community.

Museum Manager Mondays is a new program and will evolve to meet the needs of our members. Currently, we are holding a 60-minute Museum Manager Monday session on the third Monday of every month at 12 pm, but if this format doesn’t meet your needs, please contact us and we can discuss how we can adapt the program to better support you.

Join Museum Managers, CEO, Leader Curators, and Directors from across BC for the 2021 Museum Manager Summit In this new annual event, Museum Managers, CEO, Leader Curators, and Directors are invited to attend a special, free, summit during the BCMA annual conference to connect, exchange ideas, and learn. Join your peers online for a special 1.5-hour online event on October 18, 2021, from 11 am - 12:30 pm. The BCMA, in partnership with museum consultants Mighty Museum, has recently completed a year-long study of systemic governance challenges in small and medium museums across the province. This soon-to-be-published study concludes that BC's museum sector is facing a governance crisis that is contributing to staff burnout, impeding reconciliation and equity initiatives, and perpetuating toxic working environments. While this study specifically explored governance in small and medium museums, the discussion about how we as museum managers can address systemic challenges, toxic working environments, and how power can be more equitably divided is something that applies to organizations of all sizes. After the presentation, we will have an opportunity for museum managers to reconnect, discuss shared challenges, and brainstorm future opportunities. This free event is open to all museum professionals in BC who are in a senior management role. If you would like to invite a colleague who we may have missed, please email bcma@museum.bc.ca. We strive to create a safe, respectful environment where attendees can talk openly and honestly about the challenges they are facing.
